Ferdinand II was born in Toledo, Castile, he was the son of King Alfonso VII of León and Castile and of Berenguela, of the House of Barcelona. At his father's death, he received León and Galicia, while his brother Sancho received Castile and Toledo. He married Urrac of Portugal and had a son, Alfonso IX.


Ferdinand married Urraca Alfonsez Princesa de Portugal y Reina de España, daughter of Alfonso I "O Conquistador" Henriques Rey de Portugal, and Matilda de Maurienne de Savoy, in 1165.
