Jacinta Benavides married José Montaño Maldonando, son of Juan Montaño and Ygnacia Lucero. When they married, 30 Oct 1770 at Alburqueruqe, he used the name Montaño, but he used the Maldonado name in the 1750 Spanish Census. His descendents used both surnames, sometimes switching back and forth between them.

The name Maldonado, at least those who married and left descendants, does not appear in New Mexico before 1720. It seems that the name Maldonado is used by the decednants of Juan Montaño and his second wife, Ygnacia Lucero.
