• Background Information. 814 Matthew, son and heir of Godfrey de Lovaine, was one of those barons summoned to a parliament convened to meet in London, by writ dated 18 Oct 45 Henry III. He died shortly after in 1261 (46 Henry III). He left a son and heir also named Matthew.

• Background Information. 141 Matthew de Lovaine, son and heir of Sir Matthew de Lovaine. The king took his homage on 26 Nov 1261, he being then aged 24 and more. The relief for his lands held in chief was 100 marks. He held Easton ad turrim, near Dunmow, as head of his barony, and Bildeston, Suffolk, by 1 knight's fee appurtenant to his said barony. He also was steward of Eye. He was summoned for military service from 1258 to Mar 1300/1, against the Welsh, Scots and French, in respect of lands in Essex, Suffolk and York. In 1264, he had a charter for a weekly market and a yearly fair at Bildeston and in 1269, one for free warren at Easton and Bildeston. In 1271, he achnowledged a debt to Muriel, his mother and John his brother.
Matthew de Lovaine married, 1stly, on or before 31 May 1268, Helisant, a kinswoman of Henry III, who gave 300 marks as her marriage portion. Matthew's second wife was Maud Poyntz, who was the mother of Matthew's daughter Alice. Matthew died early in 1302, the writ to escheator being issued on 24 May. Dower was assigned to his widow Maud 8 July 1302. On 16 Apr 1303, she had licence to marry Isambert St. Blymund (de Sancto Blymundo). She was dead by 14 Apr 1306, when custody of her lands was granted to Queen Margaret.
