Information about this person:
• Background Information. 141 Thomas de Lovaine, son and heir, was a minor at his father's death, having been born 11 Jul 1291, at Bildeston, Suffolk, and baptized in Chelsworth church. The king granted his wardship and marriage to Matthew de Mont Martin (Monte Martini) who soon transferred the custody of the lands of Humphrey de Waleden and he to Mater Richard de Havering. The marriage of the heir was in Mar 1305 transferred to Margery, widow of Sir Robert de Basing, so that she might marry him to one of her daughters. He proved his age in 1315, and his homage was taken on 28 Apr.
Thomas de Lovaine was summoned in 1316 and later for military service against the Scots, and in 1321, was commissioned to disperse seditious meeting in Essex, and to raise troops. He was on the King's side at the battle of Boroughbridge, 16 Mar 1321/2. In 1324, he was described as a knight, and summoned to attend the Great Council at Westminster. In 1325, he was going on pilgrimage to Santiago. He was excused from military service in Scotland in May 1335, but in 1336, was one of those appointed to guard the ports of Essex against a threatened attack by the Scots.
Thomas de Lovaine married Joan, who may have been the daughter of Sir Robert de Basing and Margery his wife. A Joan, daughter of Margery de Dasyng, is named in 1312, but she was a nun at St. Helens.
