~Cokayne's Complete Peerage, 2nd Edition, (Giffard),Vol. V. p.639. footnote (c), Elis III and his wife Maud, daughter of Maurice Fitz Roberts Fitz Harding were the partents of Elis IV. Ellis III owed £100 pro fine terre sue in 1166, and he died before Michaelmas 1190, when William le Mareschal owed 140 markd for the custody of the lands of Elis Gifford. His father was also named Elis Gifford. 141

• Background Information. Feudal lord, upon the assessment for the marriage portion of King Henry II's daughter, Maud certified that he possessed nine knights's fees, and the same year 12 Henry II, gave 100 marks fine, for the livery of his inheritance. He died in 1190.

• Background Information. 903 Elias, son of Hellis and Berta, of Brimsfied died about 1190. He is mentioned with his mother Berta in 1167. His children were Elias, under age at the time of his father's death in 1190 Gilbert, who had a son also named Gilbert Berta, m. _________Ceilwey, and had a son named Elias, who was grandfather of John Cailwey who petioned for the barony in 3 Edward III.

Helias married Maud de Berkeley, daughter of Maurice I "the make peace" de Berkeley and Alice de Berkeley. (Maud de Berkeley was born about 1166.)
