• Background Information. 255 Helias Gifford took up arms with the other Barons against King John, and in the 18th year of that Monarch's reign, all his lands were consisting of Wilts, Northampton, Goucester, Somerset, Dorset, Oxford, and Bersks, were given by order of the king to Bartholomew Peche, but restored by Henry III. By inquisition taken after the death of this feudal baron, 33 Henry III, he appears to have been possessed of the manor of Winterborne, Wiltshire, England, and that lordship was then the head of his barony. He died 33 Henry III.
