• Background Information. 910 Robert was the younger brother of Adam, and both were the children of Walter and Christiana de Strickland. Adam was the heir of Walter. Robert and Adam were both witnesses as a consenting party to their father's charter to the priory of Wetheral [Prescott, Wtherhal, pp. 326-7] In 1256, there was a claim made by Eve, daughter of Dolfin, against Adam son of Walter for a bovate and two acres of "Strikland," and against Robert son of Robert de Strikland for another bovate and thirteen acres there "with the appurtenaces" [Assuze Roll, Westmorland, no. 454]. Since the manor of Great Strickland was the inheritance of Adam's and Robert's mother, Christian, Great Stickland would fall into the hands of the second son. Both father, Walter, and bother Adam never styled their name as "de Strickland" but rather as Walteri filius Adam and Adam' filius Walteri.
A Robert de Strickland served as a juror at Appleby in 1220 [Assie Roll, Westmorland, no. 312, m. 27]. This is likely the Robert de Strickland that was the son of Walter de Strickland and Christian de Lethem. This Robert de Strickland very likely died during the life time of his parents, since Sir Robert de Strickland immediately inherits Great Sticklad following the death of Walter and Christian.
