• Background Information. 910 We know that the wife of Walter was Christiana Strickland because of an entry in the Assize Roll for Westmoreland, no. 985, m. 23, Sir William de Strickland, who is known to be the great grandson of Walter and Christian, refers to Christiana as his "great-grandmother, Christian de Leteham."
The author of The Early History of the Stricklands, Sydney Horace Lee Washington, says that Christiana's heritage is a mystery. There is no place in Westmoreland with the name of Leatham, nor records of Christiana's family. There is Leatham in northern Northumberland and Lytham in the Hundred of Amoundness, Lancashire, but he found no connections between Christiana and these other Lethams.
Christiana brought the manor of Great Strickland and the property at Middleton-in-Londale of the barony of Kendal to her husband. This is how this line starting with Vaux became named Strickland.
