There were three lords of Bretagne who followed Duke William into England, all with the name Alan and the tile of Count. Count Alan, or Alan Gergaunt was the son of Houel V. Duke of Bretagne, and the Conqueror granted the lands of Morcar Earl of Northumberlnad and gave his daughter Contrance in marriage. His possessions were in Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Notthinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.
