Alan III was the grandson of Richard I Duke of Normandy. The son of Ermengarde and Alan IV was Conan III, who married Maud, the natural daughter of Henry I, king of England.

"Orderic Vitalis names "Conanum" as the son of "Fergannus comes" and his second wife "filiam comitis Andegavorum" [Orderic Vitalis (Prévost), Vol. II, Liber IV, XVII, p. 292]." Conan married Matilda (Maud), the illegitimate daughter of King Henry I of England and one of his mistresses.
