María Hurtado de Salazar may have been the daughter of Andrés Hurtado and a Zuñi Woman (Zia). She was brought to Doña Bernadina Salas y Trujillo by Bernadina's father Diego de Trujillo to be raised by Bernadina. Fray Angelico Chávez suggested that she was the daughter of Bartolóme de Salazar. Brenda Aragón de Chávez, in Aquí Se Comienza, raises the possiblity that María took Beradina's husband's mother surname Trujillo rather than being the daughter of Bartolóme Trujillo's daughter.
