Geoffrey (II) St. Leger held 5½ fees in Wartling and 2 fees in Cortesley in the barony [Hall, Red Book of he Exchequer, 2:554]. By 1320 the two fees in Cortesley had been lost in the sea [Calendar of Miscellanerous Inquisitions, 2:101, no. 405]. Before 1207, Avice de Mara had given all rights in the church of Offley to the cannons of St. Mary of Bradenstoke with the assent of "G," her son and heir; in 1207 the gift was confirmed by Geoffrey St. Leger [Tecord Commission, Rotuli Chartarum, 170], The writer of Bradenstokes makes this Geoffrey St. Leger the grandson of Amicia de Mara [Victoria History of the County of Wiltshire, 3:279]. There is no clear distinction between Geoffrey I and Geoffrey II; the charter of 1207 looks like the act of a man entering his inheritance. The relationship between Geoffrey St. Leger and William St. Leger may be deduced from records, one of which in 1232, refers to William St. Leger and Joan who was the wife of Geoffrey St. Leger in connection wiith Wartling and Dallington [Calendar of Closed Rolls; Henry III, 1231-34, 2:149]; the other in 1233 refers to William St. Leger and Joan his mother, in connection with Wartling [ibid., 2:296].
