Rainald St. Leger, in about 1150 gave the Priory of St. Pancras of Lewes all his fee of Cortlesley and a bondsman at Wartling and two thousand herrings every year. His wife was Hildesent or Helisend. The witnesses included his brothers Thomas & Godard, his nephew, Robert his brother-in-law and Ralph de Sancto Ligerio [The Chartulary . . . of Lews, Sussex Record Society, 38:150, 153, Charters 38, 44, 45].
