• Background Information. 900 Sir Roger Fiennes, son of Sir William and his wife Elizabeth Batisford, was an eminent commander in the wars of Henry V and Henry VI. In 3 Henry V, he attended that Prince in his wars in Guienne, with eight men at arms and twenty-four archers ; in the next year he was retained by the King to accompany him in an expedition into France, and had for that service imprested to him 1086£ for wages for himself and his men ; in 9 Henry V, he attended the King beyond sea, accompanied with ten men at arms and thirty archers on horseback ; and in 3 Henry VI, he attended John Duke of Beford, regent of France, accompanied with thirty men at arms and ninety archers. He was treasurer of the household to Henry VI in the first year of whose reign he obtained a licence to make a castle of his house at Hurstmonceaux, which he rebuilt in a magnificent manner, as also to enlarge his park there with 600 acres. Sir Roger de Fiennes married Elizabeth, sister of Sir John Holland, of Northamptonshire, who was sheriff of that county 14 Hen. VI
