• Background Information. 141 Sir Roger de Grey, of Ruthin, co. Denbigh, Thurleigh, Harrold, Puddington, Wrest, and Brogborough, Beds, Great Brickhill, Bletchley, and Snellson, Bucks, Yelling and Hemingford Turberville, Hunts, and Holwell, Herts, younger son of Sir John de Grey, of Ruthin, Wilton-on-the-Wye, &c. [Lord Grey of Wilton]. On 11 Mar 1324/4 the King took his homage for the castle of Ruthin and the cantred of Dyffryn Clwyd, and the castle and cantred, together with 31 manors, all of which he inherited from his father by virtue of divers fines, were liberated to him.
He was about to go to Scotland in June 1327, in the retinue of the Earl of Lancaster. He was summoned for Military Service from 21 Mar (1332/3) 7 Edw. III to 27 Mar (1335) 9 Edw. III, to Councils from 30 Dec (1324) 18 Edw. II to 20 Mar (1350/1) 25 Edw. III, and to Parliment from 10 Oct (1325) 19 Edw. II to 15 Nov (1351) 25 Edw. III, by writs directed Rogero de Grey, whereby he is held to have become Lord Grey.
Sir Roger de Grey married Elizabeth, daughter, and in her issue heir, of Sir John de Hastinges, of Abergavenny [Lord Hastinges] by his 1st wife, Isabel, daughter, and in her issue coheir, of William (de Valence), Lord of Pembroke. He d. 6 Mar. 1352/3.
