• Background Information. 739 William Fitz Gerald, the eldest son of Gerald, was possessed of the castle of Kerriu, or Carrio, in Carmarthenshire, the inheritance of his mother. He died in 1173, and left issue:
Odo, from whom the numerous family of Carews descended Raymond Crassus, a principal sharer in the conquest of Ireland, who had a natural son named Maurice, from whom the lords Fitz Maurice of Kerry, in Ireland, descend from. Their other sons were Silvester, Henry and William.
