  General Notes:

A History of the County of Lancaster, Volume 6, pp.29-32, does not include the generations of Jacob de Clayton or William de Clayton who are shown in the Clayton pedigree from Visitations of Lancashire, 1613. It states that the succession is unclear until the 16th century. A James Clayton was followed by John Clayton who married Elizabeth Langton. ⁸²⁷

Abstracts of Inquisitions Post Mortem, p. 143 gives the name Adam de Clayton for this generation. The Pedigree given is:
