Mathieu I succeeded his father Simon Ier de Lorraine. Mathieu strengthen ties between Lorraine and the Holy Roman Empire, by marrying Judith Hohenstaufen, also called Berthe (1123-1195), niece of Emperor Conrad III and sister of the future Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Their children were:
• Alix or Adélais, wife of Hugh III, Duke of Burgundy • Simon II, Duke of Lorraine • Judith, wife in 1170 of Stephen I, count of Auxonne and Traves: parents of Stephen II, hence the succession of the Counts of Burgundy • Ferry I Bitche, Duke of Lorraine • Mathieu de Lorraine, Count of Toul • Thierry, bishop of Metz from 1174 to 1179
Mathieu married Bertha of Swabia, daughter of Friedrich von Staufen and Judith of Bavaria. (Bertha of Swabia died in 1195.)
