Thierry II of Alsace, the Vaillant, born between 1040 and 1050, died 30 Dec 1115, was duc de Lorraine from 1070 until 1115. He was son of Gerard d'Alsace, duc de Lorraine, and Hedwige de Namur. His first wife was Edwige de Formbach, daughter of Frederick, Earl of Formbach. Chidlren of Thierry and Hedwige were:
• Simon, duc de Lorraine
• Gertrude, who changed his name to Petronilla, derived from Peter, to show his fidelity to the Holy See, and married Florent II, Earl of Holland
On the death of his wife, he married in a second marriage to 1095 Gertrude of Flanders, daughter of Robert Ier le Frison, Count of Flanders, and Gertrude of Saxony. She was then widow of Henry III of Louvain with whom she had 4 daughters of which Adelaide de Louvain future wife of Simon I. From this second union were born:
• Thierry, lord of Bitche, then count of Flanders
• Henry I, bishop of Toul
• Ida, married to Sigefroy, count of Burghausen
• Ermengarde , married to Bernard III de Brancion
• Gisčle, married to Frederick, count of Saarbrücken

Charles Cawley's Medieval Lands, Thierry of Lorraine was the son of Gerard Duke of Upper Lotharingia. Thierry became the Duke of Lorraine. He married, as his first wife, and her second husband Hedwig von Formbach wisode of Gerhard von Süpplingenburg Graf im Harzgau, and the daughter of Friedrich Graf von Formbach and his wife Gertrud von Haldensleben. As his second wife, Thierry duc de Lorraine married Gertrude de Flandre, widow of Henri III comté de Louvain, and the daughter of Robert I "Friso" count of Flanders and his wife Gertrud of Saxony.
Thierry married Hedwig von Formbach, daughter of Frederick of Bavaria and Unknown. (Hedwig von Formbach died in 1078.)
