• Web Reference: Dictionary of Welsh Biography, Llywlyn ap Seisyll. 1012 Llywelyn ap Seisyll, king of Deheubarth and Gwynydd. Nothing is known about his father, but his mother, Prawst, is thought to be the daughter of Elisedd, a younger son of Anarawd ap Rhodri Mawr. Llywelyn married Angharad, daughter of Maredudd ab Owain ap Hywel Dda. Their son was Gruffydd ap Llywelyn.
• Background Information. 926 Llewelyn married Angharad, Queen of Powys and South Wales in 994, when Llewelyn was fourteen years of age. In 1015, he asserted his claim to the principality of Gwynedd by way of his mother. Llewelyn became the King of all Wales after defeating Aeddan ab Blegwryd in battle. According to the Welsh Chronicles, the years that followed was a time of great prosperity.
Llewelyn was killed by an assassin. He left one son named Gruffydd, who reigned from 1037 to 1064. Llewelyn erected the Castle of Rhuddlan, a palace he generally lived in, and after his death, became the royal residence during the life of his son.
