Robert de Gaunt

~Weis' Ancestral Roots . . ., 8th Edition, 156:25, Robert de Gaunt was the son of Walter de Gaunt and his wife Maud, the daughter of Stephen, Count of Brittany. Robert was married twice, first to Alice Payenl, widow of Richard de Courcy, and daughter of Henry Paynel. His second wife was Gunnor, the daughter and coheir of Ralph d'Aubigny. 160
Noted events in his life were:
• Background Information. 141 Robert was the brother of Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincoln. As "Robert, son of Walter de Gant," he confirmed grants which his father and his brother, Gilbert, had made to Bridlinton. He gave land in Rudston to this house for the souls of Alice his wife and Avice his daughter. Also, he was a benefactor to Rufford and to Bardney, as "brother of Earl Gilbert," and as heir of Gilbert de Gant his grandfather and Alice his wife, Walter his father and Earl Gilbert his brother. Robert married Alice, widow of Richard de Curcy, Curci or Curcon, the daughter of William Paynel of Drax.
Robert and his wife Alice Paynel, were notified a grant to Bardney to Robert Bishop of Lincoln, 1148-67. In 1166, Robert de Gant had twelve and one-half fees in Yorkshire, including four and one-half fees of Matthew de Curci. Robert and Alice also had a daughter named Alice or Avice, heir of her mother. Alice married Robert Fitz Harding, and her husband and son Maurice took the name Gant. Robert died in 1191.
