Gilbert de Gaunt was the son and heir of Robert de Gaunt by his second wife, Gunnor, sister of Ralph d'Aubigny. Gilbert was under age at the time of his father's death in 1191, and was a ward to William de Stutevill. Gilbert came of age about 1201, and from that time he often appears in courts as either plaintiff or defendant. He confirmed to Rufford, for the souls of his father and his mother, the land which Earl Gilbert had given them in Barton. He serviced in the Kingls army in Ireland in 1210, but latter took the side of the Barons, being one of the confederate in 1215. He had joined Louis of France in his attemp at taking England in 1216. The sword of the county of Lincoln was given to him by Louis. He was called the Earl of Lincoln, and took possession of the city and made the county tributary, but failed to capture the castle. he fled at John's approach, but later renewed the siege. He was taken prioner at the battle of "Lincoln Fair," on 20 May 1217, when Earl Marshal routed the besiegers. He was later pardoned by the king and for serving the King, he served in the King's army in Wales in 1224. In 1240, he confirmed free passage across the Humber at Barton to the monks of Bardney. He died shortly before 22 Jan 1241/2.
