• Background Information. 160 Ealdgyth, or Edith, married Maldred, who was slain in battle in 1045, Lord of Carlisle and Allerdale, and brother of Duncan, King of the Scots, son of Crinan the Thane and Bethoc, daughter of Malcolm II, King of Scots.

• Children. 882 • Dolfin, ruler in Cumbria, expelled from Carlisle by William II, King of England in 1092
• Gospatric of Dunbar, succeeded his father as second earl. He styles himself, "Gospatric the earl, brother of Dolfin" in his charter. He seems to have been the 'summus dux Londoie,' who was slain by an arrow at the battle of the Standard on 22 Aug 1138.
• Watheof, lord of Allerdale, Abbot of Croyland in 1125, until deposed by alberic, Papal legate in 1138.
• Æthelreda, married to Ducan II, King of the Scots, who was treacherously slain by the mormaer of the Mearns, 12 Nov 1094.

• Background Information. 141 Gospatric, son and heir of Maldred, presumably the son of Crinan, lay abbot of Dunkeld, by Bethoc, daughter of Malcolm II of Scotland, and Ælfgifu, daughter of Ethelred II. This gave Gospatric the ancestry of the ancient Earls of Northumberland and the royal houses of England and Scotland.
