This gave Gospatric the ancestry of the ancient Earls of Northumberland and the royal houses of England and Scotland. He paid a heavy fine to William the Conqueror for the Earldom. He joined the Norwegians, Sep 1069, and took York as well as killing all the Normans there. The Conqueror then laid waste to the whole country between York and Durham. Gospatric, fled, but later obtained a pardon. He was still in possession of the Earldom of Northumberland in 1071, but was deprived of it in 1072. At this time he fled to Scotland, where his kinsman, Malcolm Canmore, gave him Dunbar and adjacent lands in Lothian. His descendants were the Earls of Dunbar.
