William de Mohun, whose parentage is unknown, but the family originated in Moyon, near St. Lo, in Normandy [A History of Dunster, Sir Henry C. Maxwell-Lyte, p. 1]. He was a tenant in chief at the time of Domesday in Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Wilts, being then sheriff of Somerset, as he had been also in 1084. He built the castle of Dunster, married Adeliz and died after 1090.
