• Background Information:. 141 Roger de Quincy, earl of Winchester, second and surving son of Saher de Quincy, He probably on h crusade to Damietta at the time of his father's death. He was granted his father's lands on 16 Feb 1220/21. He was not immediately recognized as the Earl of Winchester until after his mother died in 1234/34. He is first described as the Earl of Winchester, 11 July 1235, and the rights in half the said Honor were confirmed, 24 Jan 1236.
In the right of his first wife, Helen, eldest daughter and coheiress of Alan, Lord of Galloway, he became Constable of Scotland. The lands of Alan, Lord Galloway, who died in 1234, were among the husbands of his wife's sisters, John de Baliol and William, afterwards earl of Albemarle (d. 1260). On the death of his sister-in-law, the Countess of Albemarle, without issue in 1246, a further part of Galloway fell to him in right of his wife.
The rights of Alan's daughters were disputed by Thomas, Alan's natural son, and the Gallwegians, preferring one lord to three, requested their king, Alexander II, either to take the inheritance himself or grant it to Thomas. On his refusal they rebelled, and were defeated by Alexander, who established the three lords in their portions of Alan's domains.
Roger married a second time, sometime before 4 Jun 1250, Maud, widow of Anselm Marsahll the ninth Earl of Pembroke, and daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, second Earl of Hereford, and first Earl of Exxex, by Maud, daughter of Raoul de Lusignan, comté de Eu. Maud Marshall died, 20 Oct 1252, at Broby, Leicester and was buried at Brackley. Roger then married for a third time, without license from the King, sometime before 5 Dec 1252, to eleanor, widow of William de Vaux, and the seventh daughter of William de Ferrers, the fifth Earl of Derby and his first wife, Sibyl.
Roger died 25 Apr 1264, and his lands were divided between his three daughters by his first wife. Firt of these daughters was Margaret, who married, as his second wife, her step-mother's father, William de Ferrers, 5th Earl of Derby, who died Mar 1253. Margaret died shortly before 12 Mar 1280/81. Second of these daughters was Elizabeth or Isabella, who married Alexander comyn, sixth Earl of Buchan, who died shortly before 6 Apr 1290. The third daughter was Helen or Ellen, who married Sir Alan la Zouche, of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, who died 10 Aug 1270. Roger married Elena of Galloway, daughter of Alan Lord of Galloway Constable of Scotland and Ragnhild de L'Isle 160.,529 (Elena of Galloway was born about 1207 in Carrick, Aryshire, Scotland, died Shortly before 26 Oct 1274 in England 141 and was buried in Oct 1274 in Leeds Priory 160.)
