The House of Langton of Low was founded by Robert de Langton, the son and sucessor of John and Alice, who endowed his second son, also named Robert, with the ancient patrimonial property in Leicestershire as well as with the manor of "Hindlegh," near Wigan, with the fee of Makersfield, and the manor of Low in Hindley was the manor house of the second Robert's descendants.

Robert, son of Alice and John, conjointly with his wife Margaret, levied a fine in 9 Edward III (1335) of the third part of the manor of Langeton with appurtenances in the county of Leicester, of one Messuageand one carucate of land in Hendon in the county of Middlesex, of one messuage and 38 and 1 half acres of appurtenances in Walton-in-le-Dale and of the manor of Hyndelegh, and half the manor of Goldburn with appurtenances, in the county of Lancaster. Under this find, the original family property in Leicestershire passed to their second son, Robert.

Sir Robert married a woman named Margaret, who is thought to have been a daughter of William, son of Henry de Orrell, in Edward III (1340), some of the Orrell estates seem to have been settled on him and his wife and their issue.

The next year he had a license to embattle (kernellare) he house at Newton. In 1346, Sir Robert, was serving under the king in his French wars, and was knighted shortly after the siege of Calais.

Sir Robert died on Sunday before the feast of St. Michael, 26 Sep, 35 Edward III (1361), leaving sons John, Richard and Robert. Richard likely became the Rector of Wigan. Robert became a serviens ad arma and took Hindley and the original paternal property in Leicestershire, with a carucate of land at hendon in Middlesex, while the barony of Newton and Walton-le-Dale devolved upon his grandson Ralph, the son of his son John, who had died in his lifetime.
