• Background Information. 141 John Lovel married Maud, eventually heir of her brother, Edward Burnell and daughter of Sir Philip Burnell of Acton Burnell, by Maud, sister of Richard Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel, and daughter of John Fitz Alan. Maud was aged 25 in 1315. John Lovel died 24 June 1314, being killed at Bannockburn. His widow, Maud, was suing for her dower in February 1314/5. She married, before 4 Dember 1315, and without the King's licence, Sir Johnde Haudlo, who died 5 August 1346. Maud died before 17 May 1341.

• Background Information. 1284 The bishop, Robert Burnell, died in 1292, [Chan. Inq. p.m. 21 Edw. I, no. 50] while he was in attendance on the king at Berwick, [Ibid.] and he left as heir Philip the son of his brother Hugh. [Ibid.] This was Sir Philip Burnell of Acton Burnell in Shropshire, who married Maud daughter (C.P. says Maud is the sister) of Richard Earl of Arundel. He died in 1294, and his son and heir was Edward Lord Burnell. The latter, at his death in 1315, held 5 acres of land in Rotherhithe of the prior, by service of 5s. and suit of court, and of the Earl of Gloucester 24 acres, of which 16 acres were below high water mark and 8 acres were dry. His heir was his sister Maud, the wife of John Lovel Lord Lovel de Titmersh. [Chan. Inq. p.m. 9 Edw. II, no. 67] She, after the death of this husband in 1315, married John de Handlo, on whom, in conjunction with herself, the manor was settled in 1331. [Feet of F. Div. Co. East. 5 Edw. III]
