At this point, an unusual problem develops which may or may not be solvable. I show that Roger de Mowbray (died 1263) married (lst) about 1238 to an unknown daughter of Thomas de Furnival, of Sheffield, co. York, by Bertha, the newly identified daughter of William de Ferrers, Earl of Derby. He married (2nd) date uncertain but before 1257 to Maud de Beauchamp, daughter of William de Beauchamp, Knt., Baron of Bedford, co. Bedford, by Ida Longespee. Both wives were or royal descent. The first wife descends from King Henry I through her new Ferrers ancestry. The second wife descends from King Henry II through her Longespee ancestry.
Roger de Mowbray clearly had his son and heir, Roger, by his 2nd wife, Maud de Beauchamp. However, it is less certain which wife was the mother of his two daughters, Joan, wife of Robert de Mohaut, and Isabel (or Elizabeth), wife of Adam de Newmarch. As best I can determine, both Joan and Isabel were married to their respective husbands before their father's death. If so, then presumably they were children of their father's 1st marriage, as they appear to be somewhat older than their brother, Roger, who was aged 6 at his father's death.
There doesn't seem to be a good indication as to when Roger de Mowbray's 2nd wife, Maud de Beauchamp, was born. It appears that Maud was born after 1225, as she had at least one child by her 2nd marriage to Roger le Strange, of Ellesmere, co. Salop. A birthdate of 1225 would barely permit Maud to be the mother of Roger de Mowbray's daughters, Joan and Isabel. All things considered, I feel it better to assign Joan and Isabel to Roger de Mowbray's lst marriage to his Furnival wife.
Daughter married Roger de Mowbray, son of William de Mowbray Baron of Axholme and Unknown.
