• Background Information. 160
Sir Robert de Neville, of Hornby Castle, knighted in 1344, he was at the siege of fought at Crécy 26 Aug 1346, the commissioner for Lancashire 1344, 1346, Justice of the Peace for Yorkshire 1353 and was summoned to council at Westminster 1341/2. Sir Robert died after Jul 1373. He married, first, Joan de Atherton who was living in 1348 and was the daughter of Henry de Atherton of Atherton and Emma de Aintree, and a descendant of William de Atherton of Atherton, 1212. He married second, Elizabeth St. Laurence, widow of Sir Roger de Kirkeby, of Horton Kirby, Kent, who died by 1338, and daughter of thomas de St. Laurence.

• Background Information. 141
Robert de Neville, was the son of Robert, younger son of Geoffrey de Neville and Margaret de Lungvilliers, and heir to his cousin John de Neville. He was over the age of 23 in Dec 1335. He had writ of livery, after doing homage, 18 Mar 1335/6. He was summoned to to the Council at Westminster on 25 Feb 1341/2. In 1344, he was made commissioner of peace in Lancashire, and again in 1346, as well as keeper of the peace in West Riding of Yorkshire in 1350. He was a knight by the autumn of 1344, and fought a Crécy, 26 Aug 1346, and later in the siege of Calis. From 1350 onwards, he appears to have been in financial trouble.

Robert de Neville married, as his 1st wife, Joan, daughter and heir of Henry (son of Hugh) de Atherton, by Emma, his wife. Joan was living in the autumn of 1348. His 2nd wife was named Elizabeth. The date of his death is uncertain, but he and his second wife were living in Ju 1373.
