• Background Information. 748 Thomas Stanley, of Lathom and Knowesley, Lancashire, son and heir of John Stanley, Steward of the household of Henry IV, and Isabel, sister of Sir William Harington, Knight of the Garter, of Hornby Castle in Lancashire. Thomas Stanley was knight before 1429, when he was made Lieutenant Deputy Governor of Ireland (1431-1436), and was summoned to parliament for Lancashire from 1446 to 1454. He was the Comptroller of the Household in 1448. He was a Conservator of the Peace with Scotland on several occasions, 1450-1459. He was summoned to Parliament as Baron, Lord Stanley, by a special writ, tested 15 Jan 1455/46. He was elected to the Knights of the Garter before 13 may 1457, and was installed on 14 May 1457. He was an embassy to Scotland in 1458. He married Joan, daughter and coheir of Sir Robert Goushill, of Hoveringham, Nottingham, and Elizabeth Duchess of Norfolk, daughter and coheir of Richard Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel.
