Juan Bautisata de Anaza was the son of Juan Bautista de Anaza and María Rosa Becerra Nieto of Fronteras, Nueva Navarra, Nueva España. His paternal grandparents were Antonio de Anaza, a pharmacist, and Lucía de Sassoeta of Hernani, Guipuzcoa, España. His maternal grandparents were Antonio Becerra Nieto and Gregoria Gómez de Silva of Janos, Nueva España. His father, of the same name, was killed by Apaches 9 May 1740, when Juan Bautista was only three years of age.

On the twenty-fourth of June of (the year) one thousand, seven hundred and sixty-one, Captain Don Juan Bautista de Anza and Doña Ana Maria Perez Serrano, resident of this town, were married infacie ecclesiastie, and were veiled in nuptial benediction the following day.

Witnesses were Father Salvador Ignacio de la Peña, Lord Bachilor Don José Manuel Diaz del Carpio, and the Lord High Mayor Don Buenaventura de Llenes.
