John Fitz Alan, feudal Lord of Clun and Oswestry and (according to the admission of 1443), Earl of Arundel, only son and heir of John by Maud le Botiller, born 14 September 1246. He did homage for his estates 10 December 1267. He, also, though 22 years at his father's decease, was never known as Earl of Arundel, and it is incredible that, if he had ever borne that title, as annexed to the Castle and Honour, the fact would have been ommitted in the inquisition which finds him to have died seized [1272], 56 Henry III, of that Castle and Honour held by the 4th part of a Barony.

John Fitz Alan married Isabel, daughter of Roger de Mortimer, of Wigmore, by Maud, daughter and coheir of William de Briouze, of Brecknock. He died 18 March 1271/2, and was buried in Haughmond Abbey, Salop. His widow married, before 1273, Ralph d'Arderne (living 1283) and married 3rdly, 2 September 1285, at Poling, Sussex, (privately) Robert de Hastang, for which marriage, having omitted to obtain Royal license, she was fined £1,000. He was living 1 April 1292 and she d. shortly bef. 1 April 1292.

On 10 Dec 1267, the King accepted the homage of John Fitz Alan the third, with the usual Writ, the King ordered the Escheator to take security for his Relief, and to give him seizin of his inheritance. This Relief was £100 for his Barony in Shropshire and elsewhere, and £25 for his fourth share of the Barony of the Earls of Arundel.

John, the third, was married in the lifetime of his father, some time before 14 May 1260 to Isabel, daughter of Roger de Moritmer of Wigmore. John was stated to be under the age of 14 at the time a fine was levied for this marriage.

On 27 Dec 1268, "John son of John Fitz Alan," as he styles himself, confrimed to Haghmon Abbey the grant of Muleford Mill, which his father had given to be buried at that Monastery.

John fitz Alan the 3rd died on 18 Mar 1271 at the prime of his life. His son and heir, Richard was only five years old.
