"John, son of William Fitz Alan," as he is called was in the service of either King John or the Earl of Salisbury, 28 Aug 1212. On 3 Oct 1216, King John presented to Cound Church, claiming the patronage in "virtue of the attainder of John Fitz Alan, his enemy." John fitz Alan was not back to his allegiance with the crown upon the death of King John. it wasn't until Oct 1216 when King Henry III empowers him to collect the scutage of his Tenants in Arwickshire, Wiltshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Oxfordshire, and Shropshire.

John Fitz Alan, son of William Fitz Alan, and heir to his brother also named William, went on a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Santiage de Compostella on 26 Jan 1220. On 19 Feb 1221, he was empowered to collect his own scutage because he had been at the Siege of Biham with the King. On 11 Feb 1225, he was at Westminster an attested to the Carla de Forestis of Henry III.

By the end of 1333 there is evidence on the Patent-Roll that the King began to distrust John Fitz Alan. John Fitz Alan's Castle of Clun was in the custody of a Nominee of the Crown, and he had to give hostages for his fidelity. One of these hostages was returned after being in the charge of John le Strange by a Writ of 6 Feb 1238. The others were freed by the Sheriff of Shropshire sometime after 15 May 1234.

On 15 March 1240 there was a Writ relative to the assignment of the dower of Hawyse de Albo Monasterio, widow of John Fitz Alan. We can assum that John Fitz Alan died before 15 Mar 1240. Hawyse was John Fitz Alan's second wife. His first wife, and the mother of his son and heir, also named John, was Isabel, sister and coheir, of Hugh de Albini, last Earl of Arundel of his line. His second wife, Hawyse de Blancminster, survived her husabnd for only a short time, and died beofre 19 Sept 1242. At this time, her estate devolved to her step-son, John Fitz Alan, the younger.
