• Background Information. 141 Thomas, father of John Fitz Gerald, Earl of Kildare, was the youngest son of Maurice Fitz Gerald the Justiciar who died in 1257, Thomas recieved lands from his brother Maurice in Sligo. Thomas Fitz Maurice died at his brother's castle of Lough Mask in 1271 [according to the Annals of Loc Cé, Rolls Ser., Vol. I, p. 469.]
• Background Information. 1300 John Fitz Thomas Fitzgerald was born at Banada, Sligo in Ireland in 1255. He succeeded his cousin Gerald as the 5th Braon of Offaly. John was the son of Maurice III's son Thomas Fitzgerald, who was born at Banada, Sligo in 1229 and married Rohesia de St. Michael. Thomas died at Ballyloughmask in 1271.

• Background Information. 991 Thomas Fitz Maurice, third son of the second Baron, founded the Franciscan Abbey at Castleermot.
Thomas Fitz Marice married, as his first wife, Rohesia or Rose, daughter of Richard de St. Michael, Lord of Rheban, and heiress of Athy and Woodstock. Thomas and Rohesia had one son, John, his seccessor. Thomas married, as his second wife, Margaret, daugther of Thomas Lord Mandeville. His third wife was Mary, daughter of Theobald (Walter) Butler.
