• Background Information. 141 Sir John Darcy married, 1stly, Emmeline, daughter and heir of Walter Heron, of Silkstone, co. York (son and heir apparent of Sir William Heron, of Hadstone, Northumberland, and Notton, co. York), by Alice, daughter of Sir Nilcholas de Hastinges, of Allerston, co. York, and Gissing, Norfolk. She was aged 7 1/2 years in May 1297.
Walter Heron was son of William by his 1st wife, Christian (m. in or before 1270), daughter and heir of Sir Roger de Notton. Alice was married to Walter at Allerston, 27 Oct 1284; her mother was named Emmeline. Genealogists have confused the two Emmelines. On 2 Mar 1347/8 John Darcy of Knaith released to William Heroun kt. and Isabel his wife, and to Margery late the wife of Roger Heroun kt., all his right and claim in the manor of Ford, Northumberland.

• Background Information. 764 "Gilbert de Notton first occurs in 1185, in reference to an agreement which he made with Richard de Eland. In 1202, Gilbert and his son William de Notton, contributed to the third scutage of King John and to the aid levied that year, in respect of their thanelands [Pipe Rolls, pp. 55, 152] Abot 1200, William de Notton married Cecily, daughter and ultimately heir of Edith, Lady of Barton, who shortly after married Gilbert de Notton, father of this William. Cecily died before her mother, but upon the death of Edith de Barton early in 1222, Gilbert de Notton, son of William, by Cecily, daughter of Edith by her first husband, Augustine de Barton, succeeded to the manor of Barton. The heir of Gilbert de Notton was Gilbert, his eldest son and heir, who married Margery daughter of Hugh de Eland. (This Margery, who had been dowered by Gilbert de Notton of 2 car. in Wodehusum and 2 bov. in Farnley, afterwards married Sir Baldwin le Tyas, co. Final Concord, 20 Hen III, Yorks, in Yorks. Arch. Journal, vii, p. 131 et in notis.) This said Gilbert and Margery had issue Roger de Notton, who died in 1241, possessed of Silkston, Farnely Tias and Woodsome, leaving issue a daughter and heir Christiana, married to William Heron, from whom descended the lord Darcy [Hunter's Deanery of Doncaster, ii. 391]." Gilbert de Notton, father of Roger de Notton, afterwards became known as Gilbert de Barton.
