Background Information. 141 Henry de Bohun, hereditary Constable of England, was son and heir of Humphrey de Bohun, who was also hereditary Constable of England. His mother was Margaret, widow of Conan (le Petit), the Duc de Bretagne and Earl of Richmond. Margaret was the daughter of Prince Henry of Scotland, Earl of Huntingdon, by Ada, daughter of William de Warenne, Earl of Surrey. He was therefore the nephew to William, the Lion, King of Scotland. Henry was the grandson of another Humphrey de Bohun by Margaret, eldest daughter and eventually coheir of Miles (of Gloucester), Earl of Hereford and Constable of England. Having inherited through his aforesaid grandmother the principal estates of the former earls, he was created, 28 April 1200, by charter dated at Porchester, Earl of Hereford. After the coronation he was sent (1200) with the Bishop of Durham and the Earl of Norfolk to conduct his Uncle William, King of Scotland, to do homage at Lincoln.

Margaret of Huntingdon, the widow of Conan IV "le Petit" Duke of Brittany and daughter of Henry of Scotland Earl of Huntindon & Northumberland & his wife Ada de Warenne, married Humphrey de Bohun. The origin and first marriage are deduced from Benedict of Peterborough recording that "filia sororis regis Scotiĉ Willelmi comitissa Brittaniĉ" gave birth in 1186 to "filium
Arturum" [Benedict of Peterborough I 1186, p. 361]. Her birth date is estimated from the Rotuli de Dominabus of 1185 which records property "villam de Wissinton" held by "Margareta comitissa
xl annorum", adding that "comes Britannie habet filiam suam" and that she has "i filium de Humfrido de Buun qui est infra etatem" [Rotuli Dominabus, Rotuli V, Norffolk, p. 33]. The Genealogia Comitum Richemundiĉ records that "Conanus filius Alani" married "Margaretam sororem Willielmi Regis Scotie" [Genealogia Comitum Richemundiĉ post conquestum Angliĉ, RHGF XII, p. 569]. A manuscript which narrates the descents of the founders of Lanthony Abbey records that "dominus Humfridus quartus de Bohun, comes Herefordiĉ et constabularius Angliĉ" married "Margaretam comitissam Britanniĉ" [507]. The Annals of Burton record the death in 1201 of "Margareta mater
Constantiĉ, soror Willelmi regis Scotiĉ, mater Henrici de Boum comitis Herefordiĉ" [Dugdale Monasticon VI, Lanthony Abbey, Gloucestershire, II, Fundatorum progenies, p. 134].
