• Background Information. 1055 William de Mobberley, of Mobberley in Cheshire, Esq. had seven daughters by his second wife, Maud, daughter and heir to Robert Downes, of Chorley. This William de Mobberley was Sheriff of Chester in 1319. By William's first wife he had Sir Raufe de Mobberley, who died without issue, in France in 1361; and a daughter, Ciceley, who, in 1329 wedded John Dumville, the younger, of Mobberley. Upon the death of Sir Raufe de Mobberley, who had succeeded his father, William, in 1326, Ciceley, his sister, inherited the estate of Mobberley. Ciceley's half blood sisters became coheirs to their mother's lands in Chorley.
