William de Grey is frequently mentioned in the Gascon Rolls, often with and always after John de Grey of Wilton, his brother. He was with both is brothers, the other being Richard de Grey of Codnor, a witness, 20 July 1254, at St. Macaire to a grant by Prince Edward, endowing Eleanor, sister of the King of Castile, afterwards Queen of England. In 1268 Sir William de Grey quitclaimed to the Bishop of Lichfield the advowson of Sandiacre, which the Bishop's predecessor had acquired from Richard de Sandiacre [Feet of Fines], Derby, Hilary 52 Hen. III. Land in Sandiacre was held of the Greys of Codnor. See Cal. Inq. p. m., vol. ii of Edw. I, no. 467, and petition [Idem], undated, from Henry de Grey of Codnor that the King would remove his hand from land which Sir Richard de Grey held of him by knight service in Sandiacre, co. Derby, during minority of his heirs; which request was granted 16 Feb. 1300/1 [Cal. Fine Rolls].
