• Background Information. 1192 Sir John Cockayne of Ashbourne, son and heir of Sir John Cockayne and Letitia his wife, was M.P. for the ocunty of Derby several times. He married Cecilia, relict of Robert Ireton, of Ireton, co. Derby, and died in 1372. The effigies on one of the altar tombs in Ashbourne church are attributed, the one to this Knight, and the other to his son Edmund Cockayne.
"1370. John Cokeyn de Asheburn and others gave to the Abbot and Convent of Derley ten messuages, one mill, four shops, six cottages, fifty acres of land with the appurtenances in Derby."
This Sir John Cockayne was the 8th in descent from the John Cockayne of Ashbourne, circa 1150. He had two sons, Edmund Cockayne, living 3 Henry IV (1402), and Sir John Cockayne, Chief Baron of the Exchequer.

• Background Information. 1190 William Cockeyn, of Ashburne, in 1299, by Sarah, his wife, had issue, John living in Ashburne, 1305, father of John Cockayne, who by Letitia his wife, was father of another John Cockney, a person of great distinction, temp. Edw III. The last named John Cockayne married Cecilia Vernon, of co. of Derby, and had two sons. Edmund and Sir John of Bury Hartley of Bedford, ancestor of the family of Cockayne, of Cockayne-Hatley.
