• Background Information. 1221 The manor of Long Stanton was said, c. 1235 to be held of the barony of Chipping Warden by William 'de Chedwey',[B.L. Harl. MS. 3601, f. 142v., printed in Liber de Bernewelle, 240, as Chodwey.] probably an error for Cheyney. William Cheyney, presumably the same man, held 1/2; fee in 1242-3 [Bk. of Fees, ii. 924] and remained in possession in 1247. Henry son of Sir William Cheyney held it in 1279 and 1283, [Rot. Hund. (Rec. Com.), ii. 463; Cal. Inq. p.m. ii, pp. 207-8; cf. Feud. Aids, i. 138] Margery Cheyney in 1302-3, [Feud. Aids, i. 148] and a series of John Cheyneys between 1316 [Ibid. i. 152, 167; Cal. Close, 1333-7, 547; P.R.O., CP 25(1)/27/56, no. 27] and 1377. Sir William Cheyney of Fen Ditton held the manor by 1385 [E.D.R. (1896), 30; Visit. Cambs. (Harl. Soc. xli), 118- 19] and died after 1393; [Pemb. Coll. Mun., Longstanton C4, C5] by 1397 it had passed to his son John, [E.D.R. (1900), 117; East Anglian, n.s. x. 296-7] who entailed it in 1406 and died after 1428. Cheyneys descended through John's brother and heir male Laurence (d. 1461) to Laurence's son Sir John (d. 1489) and Sir John's son Sir Thomas.
