• Background Information. 1223 The Andevilles held a mesne lordship: in 1086 Humphrey (probably de Andeville) was holding the manor [V.C.H. Cambs. i. 384], and Richard de Andeville, who was holding land in Cambridgeshire c. 1236 [Feud. Aids, i. 608], held land in Wimpole in 1242\endash 3 [Feud. Aids, ii. 925]. By 1279 the heirs of Alexander de Andeville were mesne lords in Wimpole [Rot. Hund. (Rec. Com.), ii. 566].

• Background Information. 1040 Beatrice was in 1259 the wife of Alexander and Andevil and held in Kinstanton, Dorset, of the inheritance of her daughter Ela Malmains the wife of Robert de Plessy [Hutchins, County of Dorset, 3:301]. Her daughter Beatrice Andevill was already married to Robert del Hoo in 1280 [Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem, 2:207, no. 374].
