• Background Information. 1032 Sir Robert de Waterton, a younger son of William de Waterton, of Wateron in the Isle of Axholme, appears to have inherited the property in Methley from his mother, the daughter and heir of Thomas de Methany. He acquired two other estates in Methley, viz, Woodhall by marring Cecilia, daughter and heir of Robert Fleming, and the manor and lands in Methany of the priory of St. Nicholas of Pontefract, by virtue of an exchange. He has been Constable of Pontefract and Master of the Horse.
