• Background Information. 141
Robert, son and heir by 1st wife, married, by February 1239/40, Alice, daughter of Henry Fitz Gerold (died circa 1231), by Ermentrude Talbot, and granddaughter of Henry Fitz Gerard (died 1174-75), Chamberlain to Henry II. In 1260 he and his wife conveyed to Gerard de Lisle, their younger son, her Mundford estate, and two years later Alice, as widow, confirmed the grant and released Gerard from payment of the rent of £10 which had been due to her late husband. • Background Information. 1216
Henry Fitz Gerold, who succeeded to Kingston Lisle in 1218, married Ermentrude Talbot and had a son and heir Warin alive in 1254 [Eynsham Cartul. loc. cit.; Anct. D. (P.R.O.), C 2135; Feet of F. Berks. 26 Hen. III, no. 25; 30 Hen. III, no. 3; Rôles Gascons, i, 472]. Warin evidently died without issue, for Alice, the daughter of Henry [Abbrev. Plac. (Rec. Com.), 311], was his ultimate heir.

She married Robert de Lisle of Rougemont [Blomfield, Topog. Hist. of Norfolk, ii, 242-3; Feet of F. Berks. 45 Hen. III, no. 3] and had two sons Robert and Gerard [Blomfield, loc. cit]. To the latter she granted in 1269 the manor of Kingston Lisle in tail to hold of her and her heirs [Feet of F. Berks. 54 Hen. III, no. 3]. Gerard had a son Warin [Wrottesley, Ped. from Plea R. 157], who was in possession in 1316 [Feud. Aids, i, 50] and settled the manor in 1320 on the heirs of himself and his wife Alice Tyes [Feet of F. Berks. 13 Edw. II, no. 3]. His lands were forfeited on his execution for rebellion in 1322 [Chart. R. 15 Edw. II, m. 4] and granted to Hugh le Despencer. They were subsequently restored to Alice, who was still in possession in 1336 [Cal. Chart. R. 1327\endash 41, p. 357]. Her heir was her son Gerard de Lisle [Chan. Inq. p.m. 1 Edw. III (1st nos.), no. 15; Wrottesley, loc. cit], who was summoned to Parliament as a baron in 1357 [G.E.C. Peerage, v, 113]. He had a son Warin [Chan. Inq. p.m. 34 Edw. III (1st nos.), no. 53], whose daughter and heir Margaret married Thomas Berkeley[Wrottesley, loc. cit.; Chan. Inq. p.m. 7 Edw. IV, no. 44].
