• Background Information. 141 John de Port was the 3rd yet 1st surving son and heir of his father, and he confirmed his father's gifts to Sherborne, desiring to be buried there in a charter witnessed "his wife Maud and his sons Adam and Hugh." In 1164, he became one of the sureties for the Archbishop Beket. For the souls of his parents and his brother William, he gave to Winchester Cathedral and Henry the Bishop two mills called the sheriff;s mills situate before the bishop's house, and he was a benefactor of the Templars. In 1166, he held in chief 55 knights' fees of the old feoffment and 2 of the new. He married Maud and died in 1168 before Michaelmas.
