William Pantulf, had come into notice long before his father's death, as early as 1194. In 1205, William Pantulf received his father's scutage, while his brothers Ivo and Hugh, have grants of land at Stottesden. William Pantulf of Wem served as a Knight in King John's Irish Campaign of 1210.
On 14 Dec 1225, William Pantulf is named first of the Commissioners who were in February following to render account at Westminster of the tax of fiteenth as levied in Salop and Staffordshire. He appears under King Henry II on 14 May 1226 and on 26 Dec 1226, a Writ-Close orders that the variances, which subsisted betwen William Pantulf and Madoc ap Griffin (of Bromfield), should be settled at Oswestry, on a fixed day, and be arbitration of John Fitz Alan, John le Strange, Bartholomew Turet, Robert de Girros and the Sheriff of Shropshire.
William Pantulf's name appears in the records up to 4 Feb 1223, the time of his death, when it appears that Fulk Fitz Warin, the grandfather of Matilda Pantulf, gave the King 600 merks for custody of his land and heirs. These heirs were two daughters, Matilda and Elizabeth. Elizabeth most likely died unmarried soon after her father. Matilda (Maud) married Ralph Pincernator or le Botiler, sometime before 1243 and Wem passed to Matilda and Ralph.
