• Background Information. 141 Sir John Grey married, as his first wife, Emma, daughter and coheir of Geoffrey de Glanville, by whom he had a son Reynold, who presumably died s.p. and a daughter Emma, who married William de Huntingfield and brought her husband the Glanville manor of Alderton.
Next Sir John Grey married Emma, apparently the widow of John de Segrave, and daughter of Roger de Cauz, by Nichole, daughter and heir of Bartholomew de Leigh. Emma de Cauz was the morther of Sir Reynold de Cruz.
Sir John Grey married, in London on 17 Oct 1251, as his third wife, Joan, widow of Paul Peyver or Piper, the King's Steward, who died the previous June. The couple paid a fine of 500 marks for marrying without licence. Joan died at Leyham in 1256 and was buried at Woburn, Beds.
Sir John Grey, of Shirland was the younger brother of Sir Richard de Grey, of Condor, and the son of Sir Henry de Grey of Thurrock by Iseude, his wife. Sir John Grey died shortly before 18 Mar 1265/6.
