• Background Information. 713,863 Sir John Arderne of Aldford, Alderly, Alvanley and Elford, Knight, and son and heir of Sir Peter and Margery, was born 1266. Soon after he was born, in a deed of 53 Henry III, his father granted to him and to his wife, Margaret dauther of Griffin ap Madog vel ab Madog, Lord of Bromfield, the manner of Congleton.
He was appointed a Commissioner of Array for Cheshire, 1 Jul 1308, along with Hugh Venables. In the same year, he made a settlement of the manors of Aldford, Elford and Alderley, in contracting for marriage for his eldest son, John, with Alice, daughter of Hugh de Venables, Baron of Kinderton, covenanting to endow her with Alvanley.
His wife, according to official records and direct evidences of the Cheshire Domesday roll, Margaret was daughter of Griffin, or Gruffydd ap Madog, the last Prince of Powys-Vadog, Lord of Bromfield and the Castle of Dinas Bran, near Llangollen. Their sons were Sir John Arderne and Peter Arderne, of Over Alderley. One of their daughters was Maud, wife of John Legh of Booths.
