Hamon Mascy 1st Baron of Dunham-Massey
Noted events in his life were:
• Background Information. 713 Hamon Massey, the first baron of Dunham-Massey, held the towns of Dunham, Bowdon, Hale, Ashley and half of Owlarton, in Bucklow Hundred, under Hugh Lupus, earl of Cheshire, in the reign of William the Conqueror; all which one Edward held formerly, as appears in the Doomsday Book.
This Hamon also had Maxfield Hundred, Bronhale and Podinton in Wirrhall Huncred, at the same time, and other lands. He also had a son, also named Hamon, who was his son and heir, and a second son named Robert Massey who witnessed the first Randle's charter of confirmation to the abby of St. Werburge in Cheshire, about 1124. ~George Ormerod's The History of County Palatine and City of Chester, Vol I, p. 520
• Background Information. 340 In 1193, Hamon subscribed the foundation chater of Chester Abbey, and granted lands to it. [Mon. i. 985]. The present town of Dunham-Massey takes it name from this first Hamon Mascy. Hamon built his castle there and made it the main residence. His descendants were to hold this manor for more than two hunred and seventy years, and for five generations in succession, the lord of the manor was named Hamon.
