• Background Information. 1558
William Pellet, of Steyning, Sussex, died between 4 May 1503 and 23 Sep 1503, dates of his will and its probate. William married Joan, who survived him. On 23/24 Dec 1484, Elizabeth, abbess of the covent of Syon, Middlesex, demised to him the Manor of Charleton in Steyning for seven years with the tithe of the parsonage of Steyning, noting that his father William Pellett had held the same lease. In 14 Henry VII (1498/9), Richard Covert and his wife Elizabeth and Robert Dernold and his wife Joan, sold three messuages and seven acres of land in Steyning to William Pelet and Robert Pelet.

William's will mentions his wife Joan; sons Thomas, Richard, William, John & James; and daughters Joas, Lettice and Margaret. William, who held lands in eleven Sussex parishes, was to be buried in the Church of Holy Trinity in Steyning. His widow Joan, describing herself as a "true bedeswoman" and late the wife William Pellet, entered undated bills of complaint in Chancery against John Tanner of Washington, Sussex, and Joan his wife for witholding from her deeds relating to a mese and forty acres of land in Findon, Sussex, bequeathed to her by her husband.
